Local guard Mark Matthews of Fort Myers HS has put together a nice junior season together and Florida Gulf Coast has taken notice.
"We're 19-8 and play in the regional quarterfinal on Thursday," Matthews said. "It's been a rebuilding year, we have some young guys on our team but it's been pretty good so far."
Last week Matthews, en route to 22 points and 18 boards, tipped in a miss at the buzzer to give the Green Wave a 57-55 win over rival Bishop Verot.
"That's our biggest rivalry of the year, it's huge for us every time. Over 2,000 people were there," Matthews said.
The 6-5 combo guard/forward is averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds a game this season and recently visited FGCU, for Jacksonville on Thursday and UNF on Saturday.
"Ever since they got to the tournament it's been a crazy environment," Matthews said. "Their style of play is nice, the way they move the ball up and down the floor. It's a great program."
Along with interest from FGCU (no offer), Matthews informed me of interest from Bucknell, Northwestern, Davidson, UCF, Xavier, and Virginia Tech.
