My Time In Raleigh & Thank You To The Readers

Way back in April I turned my Florida Gulf Coast fandom and journalistic aspirations into the dinky fgcueaglesnest.blogspot.com. Now seven months later, the Eagles Nest has become something I could have never imagined.

I just returned from a trip to Raleigh, North Carolina where I covered the FGCU Men's Basketball game against NC State. After flying in from Chicago at about noon on Tuesday, I explored downtown Raleigh and grabbed a delicious burger at Mo Joe's.

When I finally made it to PNC Arena, about 30 minutes before tip-off (thanks to some crazy traffic), the venue was just overwhelming. After walking around and enjoying the sights and sounds, I finally found my seat and settled in for the game.
During the game I tweeted out some things that I hope you all found interesting. Following the game, I miraculously found my way to the FGCU locker room. There I was able to ask Coach Dooley and Chase Fieler a couple of questions. A couple of those quotes were included in the post-game report but you can listen to Dooley's responses here.

This was my first time covering a NCAA basketball game and it was one of the best experiences of my life. It is all thanks to you, the readers. Without you, this site would not be where it is today. The Eagles Nest has surpassed 14,000 views, which is incredibly astounding.

I try to give you the best FGCU coverage around and that includes interviews. I'm very thankful to have had the chance to interview Nick Rivera, Sherwood Brown, Jamail Jones, Harrison Cooney, and Jeff Goodman.

Following my trip to Raleigh, and today being Thanksgiving, I could think of no better day to recap my time here at the Eagles Nest and thank everyone who makes it possible. Stay tuned as I hope to continue providing some great Eagles coverage.

If you have any suggestions/comments/concerns, feel free to let me know because I am always open to changes.

FGCU Outmanned In 82-62 Loss To Wolfpack

RALEIGH -- The Eagles saw their four game winning streak come to a screeching halt in Raleigh Tuesday night as NC State dominated the glass and the scoreboard, defeating FGCU 82-62.

"NC State was very aggressive, with the tempo in the beginning, and their ability to rebound the ball," said Joe Dooley.

Not helping the Florida Gulf Coast cause was Chase Fieler sitting on the bench. What has become a common theme already this season, "Golden Boy" got into early foul trouble and played only six minutes in the first half.

"Chase, as a senior, has to make sure he doesn't put himself in harms way and pick up cheap ones. He was disappointed but he'll learn from it," Dooley said.

Throughout the game, the Wolfpack outmanned FGCU on the boards and in transition; NC State owned the rebounding margin 43-25, scoring 17 second chance points off of 13 offensive rebounds. They also added 18 points in transition.

A silver lining for the Eagles was their free throw shooting; they converted 87% (20/23) of the time at the charity stripe.

Bernard Thompson, after sitting against Eckerd and Ave Maria, scored 14 points in his return for FGCU.

"Thompson's not back to 100% yet. He's working on it. Good to have him back out there, it helps our team's confidence...we need to get him completely healthy.

The Eagles return to the Fort to battle Iona on Sunday (Dec. 1) at 2 p.m. Dooley and company have a lot to improve on.

"We better fix our transition defense the way Iona runs the ball. I like what we have, we're going to get better. There are just some things we really need to tighten up on," Dooley said.

Record Crowd Cheers Eagles To 79-56 Win

Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson
The Blue and Green packed into Alico Arena on Saturday night as Florida Gulf Coast defeated Ave Maria 79-56 for their fourth consecutive victory. The total attendance was pegged at 4,633: a new Alico Arena record.

"I recognized that a lot of the kids in our student body don't know the difference between whether we're playing Eckerd or some huge school. Everyone just wants to come out, support, and have fun," said junior guard Kevin Boyle.

The Eagles certainly gave all those who attended a good show.

A balanced attack allowed FGCU to take a 15 point lead into halftime. They then outscored the Gyrenes 43-35 in the second half to end the game with a 24 point victory. The Eagles, true to form, threw down four dunks.

Dajuan Graf, in his first start, scored 10 points and dished out 5 assists. He joined four other Eagles who tallied double digit points. Brett Comer, FGCU's leading scorer with 18, also threw out 10 assists for a double double. With 12 points and 10 rebounds, Nate Hicks also tallied a double double.

"I thought we moved the ball well - scored 79 points, a pretty efficient offense for the most part. We hadh some guys step up. Kevin [Boyle] gave us good minutes off the bench. Filip..." said Joe Dooley.

The long range shot was kind to the Eagles as they shot 48% from three. Brett Comer started it off by hitting three early threes. Also heating up from long range was Filip Cvjeticanin who nailed 5/8 from beyond the arc.

The Eagles, now 4-1, will be riding a four game winning streak into Raleigh Tuesday night when they battle NC State.

"I've watched tape on them [NC State]. They're talented, an ACC caliber team. They've played in some big games. We'll have our hands full," said Joe Dooley "T.J Warren is a great plaery, can dribble drive the ball...we've got a lot of work to do the next two days."

FGCU Defeats Scrappy Tritons

Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson
After the Tritons had no more fight left, Florida Gulf Coast pulled away on Monday night in Alico and ended with a 72-55 win over Eckerd.

The Eagles saw determined Filip Cvjecticanin make his first start in a while and Bernard Thompson get the night off. Thompson was still nursing his ankle injury and Dooley made the wise choice to give him some rest. Cvjecticanin made the most of his start, scoring 12 points and snagging 2 rebounds. All of his shots came from outside the arc, and he connected on 4 of the 6. Two came from the corner and gave the Eagles a quick spurt of points in the second half.

"[I'm] proud of the way Nate and Filip stepped up for us tonight. They've been working hard and it's nice to see that rewarded," said head coach Joe Dooley.

An encouraging sign for the Blue and Green was that all the starters scored in double figures. Comer with 18, Hicks with 12, Jones with 10, Fieler with 15, and of course Cvjeticanin with 12. On the night the Eagles shot 56.5% from the floor, the best they've done all year.

Unfortunately, FGCU could not capitalize when they were at the free throw line. In a UNC fashion, they connected on 7 of their 15 FTs for an abysmal 46.7%.

The Eagles continue their season on Saturday (Nov. 23) at 7:05 p.m when they take on nearby Ave Maria.

•Eckerd begins a stretch of two none D-I opponents for FGCU. The second is Ave Maria on Saturday, Nov. 23.
•Joey Cantens, Eagles' Director of Basketball Operations, was a 2009 graduate of Eckerd. He played basketball for the Tritons, and they advanced to the D-II NCAA Tournament in each of Cantens' seasons.
•In 2005, FGCU and Eckerd faced off in the first round of the D-II Tournament and the Tritons got the better of the Eagles, winning 81-79.
•Through three games, Chase Fieler is shooting 67.9% from the floor, 75% from three, en route to an average of 15 points.
•Throwback from a 2005 Eckerd release "Joey Cantens answered with a three to make it 66-63 with 1:26 left." I think we know who the real creator of 3 point goggles is.

FGCU Pulls Out Comeback Win Against Furman

Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson
It wasn't pretty, but the Eagles pulled out their second win of the season Friday against Furman. FGCU, led by 21 points from Brett Comer, defeated the Paladins 70-69 on two last second free throws from the the junior point guard.

The Blue and Green got off to a quick start, leading 7-1, but the Paladins rebounded and took a 7 point lead heading into halftime. During the first twenty minute period however, Chase Fieler and Nate Hicks played a combined 8 minutes due to foul trouble. With a shallow front court, Dooley safely sat the two until the second half.

Similar to the first half, FGCU got out to a quick start, scoring eight straight points to take the lead. But again Furman stuck to it and took a commanding nine point lead with 6:14 to go in the game. This run was in part due to the phenomenal play of Paladins guard Stephen Croone. On the day the sophomore point guard tallied 24 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists.

A ferocious FGCU comeback and Jamail Jones layup led the Eagles to a 68-67 lead with 1:05 remaining. Following a Kendrec Ferrara shot conversion, Brett Comer was fouled with under six second left. He sunk them both and that sealed the game for the Eagles as Stephen Croone hauled up an unsuccessful three as time expired.

Main Eagle Contributors
Brett Comer: 21 points (6/14), 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 4 turnovers.
Bernard Thompson: 20 points (8/21), 4 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers

His fellow teammate, Grayson Allen, will also be signing with his respective college, Duke, today.

Fieler's Career Day Leads Eagles To Win

Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson
After being in an early hole Tuesday morning, FGCU dug themselves out and ran away with a second half lead to defeat Hartford 65-51.

The Eagles were led by lone senior Chase Fieler who had a career and game high 30 points (on 13/17 shooting). Golden Boy, as he has been nicknamed by his team, also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out one assist, and had one block. He attacked in many different ways - posting up, driving, and shooting from beyond the arc.

Not only Fieler, but the whole Eagles' squad looked tremendously better than opening night in Lincoln. They shot 50% from the field in the game, and 60% in the second half. Although only contributing nine points, Brett Comer had a enormous impact: throwing eight assists, snagging three steals, and most importantly - did not turn the ball over.

"If we keep playing like that we'll change all our games to 7 a.m," said Joe Dooley after the game.

Another unsung hero was Filip Cvjeticanin. After starting off hot from beyond the arc against Nebraska, Cvjeticanin missed all three of his shots from beyond the arc against Hartford. His presence however was felt on the defensive end where he was pest-annoying Hawks attackers left and right. The Croatian sensation's intensity was high and provided key minutes when Nate Hicks was in early foul trouble.

When the Eagles start producing points, you know what comes with it - dunks. FGCU ended the game with four dunks, including three from Chase Fieler. One from Brett Comer to Nate Hicks incited a classic reaction from Tulane transfer Marc-Eddy Norelia.

FGCU MBB vs. Nebraska Post-Game Report

The season didn't start as hoped on Friday night. The Eagles flew into Lincoln and were sluggish and slow from the first whistle.

"We definitely got off to a slow start. Offensively and defensively," said Jamail Jones, "Coaches talk about it in practice 'don't get off to a slow start, we'll have to dig ourselves out of a hole'. And we dug ourselves a hole that was too deep."

Jones and Bernard Thompson reached double figures but outside of that FGCU struggled to get anything going and a huge reason for that was costly turnovers.

"We did a pretty good job in the first half of not turning the ball over. But we turned it over six times in the first six minutes of the second half," Dooley said.

Another contributing factor to the Eagles' struggles was their defense, or lack there of. It was a blowout, but the Eagles' 57 points would have been good enough for a win back in 2011 against Nebraska; this time it was the defense.

"We gave up easy baskets...Look at the field goals, look at the shot charts, how many layups we gave up. It was disappointing, very disappointing," Dooley said.

Florida Gulf Coast will have a short turn around as they prepare for Hartford on Tuesday morning.

"There's no choice. We have to look at some of the things we did. We have to look at some of the things we can improve on - make a conscientious effort to do the things we can get better at and prepare for Hartford," Dooley said.

FGCU MBB Falls 79-55 To Huskers In Opener

Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson
Friday night meant a new era for both Nebraska and FGCU. The Huskers, in the newly built Pinnacle Bank Arena, gave the sold-out crowd what they wanted.

Dominating early, Nebraska attacked a FGCU defense that struggled with the new foul rules and lack of depth. Chase Fieler repeatedly made attempts to take charges but time and time again was called for a block. Shavon Shields diced up the Eagles with ease en route to a near career high in points.

On the other side of the ball, the Eagles struggled to get anything going offensively. Comer was the polar opposite of "Agent Zero", turning the ball over five times and struggling to ignite any offense. A bright spot for the Eagles was Marquette transfer Jamail Jones who scored 17 points on 5-12 shooting, while adding eight rebounds and one assist. In addition, Filip Cvjeticanin was perfect from the field including 2-2 from beyond the arc.

Bernard Thompson, while battling an ankle injury, hit some deep threes early but definitely did not look 100 percent. With 12 points, he joined Jones as the only Eagles in double digits.

Dooley and the crew will look to keep their heads up as they battle Hartford in their home opener on Tuesday Nov. 12 at 7:00 a.m. Tagged as "Breakfast at the Beach", the mid-major showdown will be featured on ESPN2 as part of their college basketball tip-off marathon.

Know Your Opponent: Q & A With Corn Nation

Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson
David McGee, Husker hoops guru over at Corn Nation (SB Nation's Nebraska Blog), was kind enough to do a question and answer with the Eagles Nest. Enjoy.

Update: After this Q & A took place, Huskers guard Ray Gallegos was suspended for the first two games of the season due to a violation of team rules regarding personal conduct.

Liam Jones: A lot is being made of the opening of Pinnacle Bank Arena, they're trying to create a new buzz around Nebraska hoops. Do you think it will make a difference and attract more fans even if they continue to still be mediocre?

David McGee: Well, it already has made a difference. They sold the season out in May. At the game on Friday, there will be as many at that game alone then were at the Penn St. and Northwestern games combined last season. We’re in uncharted waters here. If by the end of next season, they haven’t started winning, or at least in the bubble conversation, then, no, they won’t continue to sell out the place. If they can put it together over the next couple of years, it will be the hardest ticket in town. Husker fans love a winner, they’ll jump on that bandwagon for all it’s worth if the start winning. And it is a beautiful building. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that this program in this city has a building like this. It boggles the mind. It’s now up to the coaches and players to take advantage of it and change the culture and reputation of what has been a rather moribund program for the past 15 years.

LJ: How do you think the Huskers matchup with FGCU's up tempo style of play? Can they keep up?

DM: Not trying to cop out here, but I have no idea, honestly. There are a ton of new pieces for NU that it’s difficult to say. They’re much more athletic and talented than they’ve been in a long time and deeper, too. With FGCU replacing Sherwood Brown and Erik McKnight suspended to start the year, that has to work to Nebraska’s advantage, also considering it will be the first game under coach Dooley. There’s always a transition there, even if it’s a similar system. I’m very curious to see how the new players the emotion and expectations that will come with the season they’re about to embark on, much less the first game in the new building. There will be a lot of pomp and circumstance on Friday. How they handle that spotlight will be the question. And I honestly have no idea what the answer will be.

LJ: And considering Nebraska has a polar opposite style in terms of offense, how will they maintain that slow tempo?

DM: I’d be careful making the assumption that they’re going to slow it down. Coach Miles has recruited players to a system that puts pressure on teams and will play a much more up tempo style than they were forced to play last year. They say they want to push the tempo and play a more exciting band of basketball and they’ve got more players this year that should fit that style. That said, Coach Miles said the other day that this team can get sped up at times and when they do that they start turning the ball over. If that starts happening, they’ll have to slow it down, so that’s really the key. If they take care of the ball, which they did vs. an out-manned exhibition opponent, it should be a much more wide open game than Husker teams have been more known for.

LJ: Ray Gallegos and Shavon Shields are obviously the main guys returning but how do you think could make a surprising impact for the Huskers?

DM: Well, Gallegos has been dealing with some injury issues in preseason practices. His status for this game is still uncertain. That will bear watching. The fanbase is expecting contributions from three main newcomers: Terran Petteway, Walter Pitchford and Tai Webster. Webster is the headliner, a top international recruit with loads of talent but will need some time to adjust to the game in the states. The other two transferred in from Texas Tech and Florida, respectively. All are very athletic and can do basketball things. It’s not often that Nebraska has had players that can do all of that well, either they've been athletic and lacking in the basketball skills part of vice versa or were just fairly average (for major college basketball) across the board. These three are the obvious answers. We've been told they can do these things in spades and judging by the limited sample we saw the other day, those reports seem to be accurate.

But if you’re looking for a sleeper pick, Leslee Smith and David Rivers would be your best bets. Smith is a big body who will see time at the 4 and 5. He’s not the most heralded player, but will be a big piece of the puzzle if the Huskers want to surprise teams this season. Post depth has been a major weakness the past, well, it’s been a while since they’ve had any depth there. Rivers is a junior forward who is a versatile, solid player. He’s not flashy, but does a lot of those little things that every team needs. Like Rivers, he’ll be key if NU wants to shock the world, so to speak.

LJ: What aspect of the game do you think Nebraska can take advantage of on Friday?

With the news that  Benard Thompson will at least be not 100% and likely won’t play, Nebraska should have a decided depth advantage, even if Gallegos can’t play, either. With this game being at home and all the hoopla surrounding the it, if they can keep their poise and feed off that, it should tip the scales in Nebraska’s favor.

LJ: What weaknesses do the Huskers have that you think FGCU would be wise to exploit?

DM: Tough to say without knowing more about the Eagles squad this year. The nucleus of that team went through something last spring that no Husker has ever experienced. I don’t expect most of the FGCU squad to come into this atmosphere and be overwhelmed and wide eyed. With their sudden depth issues, however, I do question whether or not they’ll be able to run as much as they did in the past and how much they’d probably prefer to.

Eagles To Be Shorthanded In Opener

Eric McKnight
This is a given. The redshirt junior center was suspended six games for a violation of team/school policy. This thrusts Georgia Tech transfer Nate Hicks into the starting center role. While McKnight's shot blocking ability and overall defensive prowess will be missed, Hicks is more of a developed offensive player with post abilities.

Logan Hovey
Hovey, the lone FGCU commit of the 2013 class (after Neff left), has been having signs of a stress fracture. This has held him out of most practices. According to the News-Press, Hovey has been ruled out and "won't play Friday regardless of his health." These early signs of a stress fracture were first reported back on Oct. 10. Joe Dooley, smartly, is looking long term for the Eagles.

Bernard Thompson
The 2013 A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year sprained his ankle in last Friday's (Nov. 1) scrimmage against Lynn. This held Thompson out of practice on Saturday. He was then limited in practice on Sunday and only did half court work in practice yesterday (Tues. Nov. 5). In a News-Press article, Joe Dooley said "He's day to day...If he can't move and he can't play up to his ability, we're not going to put him out there." If Thompson doesn't play, his defensive presence would be sorely missed when trying to contain 6-2 senior guard Ray Gallegos.

Transfers
Obvious but Julian DeBose, Brian Greene Jr, and Marc-Eddy Norelia all have to sit out due to NCAA transfer rules. With McKnight and Hovey already out, that leaves FGCU with seven scholarship players, possibly six if Thompson is unable to play. Walk-on Armand Shoon (specifically mentioned by Dooley on media day) could see some minutes.

New Era For Head Coach Joe Dooley

Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson
Friday night will mark a new beginning for head coach Joe Dooley. After being an assistant coach for fourteen years, he returns to take the reigns at another program: FGCU.

Although Dooley is mostly known for his diligent work as an assistant at Kansas, he did serve as head coach at East Carolina from 1995-1999. During that time, the Pirates went 57-52, capturing 17 wins in both his first and second seasons. In his final two seasons, East Carolina could not maintain a .500 mark in conference play and had 23 wins combined.

"He got a chance at East Carolina when he was really young and probably admittedly [made some mistakes]," said Jeff Goodman, ESPN CBB Insider "I've talked to him recently, [he] made a few mistakes and learned from them."

Learning from mistakes, Dooley worked under legendary Kansas coach Bill Self. In Dooley's time at Kansas, the Jayhawks made it to five Sweet Sixteens, four Elite Eights, and won the 2008 National Championship.

As a new era begins for the Eagles, Dooley will look to bring his success from Lawrence to Dunk City.

"There is a great nucleus and an opportunity to build on something really special," Dooley said.

Friday will be the first chance for Dooley showcase this "special" something on a national level.

Sherwood Brown Signs With Ramat Gan

Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson
Just about a week after being cut by Maccabi Haifa, former FGCU guard Sherwood Brown has decided to stay in Israel and sign with Ironi Ramat Gan of the Liga Leumit. Ramat Gan is just an hour south of Haifa.

The Liga Leumit is the second division in Israeli and is considered the "minor league" Israeli league. Ramat Gan is currently 1-2 through the first three rounds of the season, sitting in 13th place in National League. Their next game is on Tuesday, Nov. 5 against Galil Elyon.

The Orlando native Brown joins Josh Crawford, who played for Iowa and then Indiana State, as the only Americans on Gan's roster.

Prior to this, Brown had worked out with many NBA teams but was passed up, signed with Maccabi Haifa, and was cut by Haifa. When talking with the former Eagles guard over the summer, he said that his plan was to play overseas a year or two before trying hard at the NBA.

Kaneisha Atwater Eligible To Play Immediately

Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson
Kaneisha Atwater, a VCU transfer, has now been deemed eligible by the NCAA to play immediately for FGCU.

Back on Oct. 17, the NCAA denied the initial waiver in order for Atwater to play immediately, and according the News-Press, FGCU promptly decided to appeal the ruling. VCU also said they would give their full support. Clearly the NCAA has overturned their initial ruling.

According to a NDN story, VCU head coach Marlene Stolling wrote to the NCAA, supporting Atwater and "encouraging" for immediate eligibility.

Atwater's decision to transfer to Dunk City was in order to be closer to her one year old son, Andario, in Fort Pierce. The NCAA has been very unusual in the waiver granting process, approving some that seem absurd while denying others that have legitimate reasons. Regardless, Atwater is now ready to play immediately, an encouraging sign for the Eagles team and her personal duties.

With the Rams, Atwater played in all 30 games and started in 12, averaging 6.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. She is a sophomore and his three years of eligibility left.
