FGCU Men's Tennis Has Momentum Heading Into Conference Match

(Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson)
With back to back dominating performances against in state opponents, the FGCU Men's Tennis team will have some momentum when they open their conference slate with Atlantic Sun foe UNF on Sunday, March 2.

Battling against FAMU last Saturday, the Eagles picked up their first sweep of the season in a dominating 7-0 performance. Now for the first time this season, the Blue and Green are riding a two match winning streak. That doesn't mean complacency though.

"Next week we host UNF in our conference opener and definitely need to be prepared to step things up in that match," said head coach CJ Weber.

Last season, North Florida took both matches against the Eagles, a hard fought 4-3 victory during the regular season and a 4-0 win in the A-Sun semifinals.

"We’re looking forward to getting back out there in preparation for UNF next week," said Lance Lvovsky, who defeated Jalen Evans (FAMU) 6-1, 6-1.

Also, the latest ITA rankings saw a bump of the Eagles' Jordi Vives up to No. 54 in the nation. Head over to the FGCU Tennis Complex on Sunday to see if Vives and FGCU can continue their hot streak.

FGCU Gives Record Crowd A Good Show With Double Digit Victory Over Mercer

(Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson)
In what athletic director Ken Kavanagh said was "probably the important home game ever", the FGCU men's basketball team, through solid group contributions, cruised to a 75-61 win over league leading Mercer.

This game sold out days in advance. Social media was abuzz. First place was on the line. And the Eagles delivered.

In the first half, Florida Gulf Coast began their dominance on the glass and a small run, led by two Filip Cvjeticanin jumpers, gave them a slight edge that they held onto heading into halftime. The lead would have been bigger had it not been for some sloppy turnovers.

"It was a weird start to the game. Both teams were a little rough offensively," said Joe Dooley. "Contribute that do the defense and nerves."

In arguably his best game when donning the Blue and Green, Jamail Jones brought down 13 boards, including 9 in the first half, and added 11 points. Although he has somewhat struggled from beyond the arc this season, Jones hit a huge three that capped off a 15-0 FGCU run.

"He's been terrific for us the past two weeks. That was his most complete game," said Joe Dooley. "A big factor for us his play and he's playing at a high level."

In something we have rarely seen this season, Dooley's squad put the full court pressure on the Bears. Although Mercer only turned the ball over 9 times compared to FGCU's 13, it definitely paid off for the Eagles.

"We hit them every single time on the boards and then get out and run over and over," said Brett Comer. "Their ball screen defense started to get a little slower on the hedges. I was able to turn and get other guys shots."

In what Mercer's Bob Hoffman called the Bears 'own game', Florida Gulf Coast absolutely dominated the glass 48-29. Adding to Jones' 13 rebounds, Hicks also had 8 boards. It was a main focus for the Blue and Green heading in.

"They lead the league in rebounding margin so we knew in order to stop them you have to limit them to one stop," said Chase Fieler. "And we have to steal a few offensively - Jamail [Jones] did a great job helping us down low."

With the huge home victory, Florida Gulf Coast (18-10, 12-3) is now tied with Mercer (21-7, 12-3) at the top of the Atlantic Sun standings. At the moment, FGCU holds the tiebreaker: record against 3rd place team (USC Upstate).

The Eagles face off against Kennesaw State on Sunday (senior night), and head to Lipscomb (Thursday, Feb. 27), and Northern Kentucky (Saturday, March 1). Mercer has remaining games against Stetson, UNF, and Jacksonville.

FGCU Quotables

“We really want to win the conference and bring the tournament to our place. We know that Mercer is the top team right now. We’re going to see what we did wrong last time. We know we made a lot of mistakes. But they’re coming down to Fort Myers to play us. We have a home-court advantage and, hopefully, that will work in our favor," -Bernard Thompson via News-Press

“We’ve got some time to prepare, which is nice. We need to focus and fix the mistakes we made last time," -Joe Dooley via News-Press

“I feel like we’re the most talented team in the league. They’re definitely talented. Every team in our league has a lot of talent. But I think if we play our best it’s really just on us. We can’t beat ourselves," -Chase Fieler via News-Press

“They’re a great team, very consistent. Wins against BCS schools and they’re really on the rise with their program as well. I think if they would’ve been able to stay in the A-Sun, it would’ve given a lot more power to the conference," -Chase Fieler via Naples Daily

Mercer Quotables

"Going down to FGCU. They're going to be ready. They've got a great team. Joe Dooley is doing a fantastic job with his squad. Those guys have bought in. Those are hard circumstances he came in under and he's done really well. Their guys have played amazingly well," -Bob Hoffman

They lost at ETSU but anybody can lose there. We've lost there many times and we lost at Upstate. It happens in our league," -Bob Hoffman

"We're going to have to be ready. I'm sure its going to be really loud so we'll practice with a lot of noise this week and be ready to make our offensive sets with different kind of hand gestures to make sure we're ready for that crowd. It should be a great college basketball experience," -Bob Hoffman

What's At Stake For FGCU

Right now the Eagles are eyeing the ever important regular season crown in order to gain the top seed in the Atlantic Sun tournament. Being the 1st seed ensures that you will be playing all games on your home court - a huge advantage in the tough A-Sun. FGCU, 11-3 in conference, sits in 2nd place and just a game behind Mercer (12-2). If Florida Gulf Coast beats Mercer on Friday and both teams win out after that, the tiebreaker is record against the third place team. ETSU, UNF, and USC Upstate are all vying for the third seed. Because FGCU lost at ETSU, Eagle fans should be rooting for both UNF and USC Upstate, both whom Mercer has lost to.

FGCU Baseball Opens Season With 7-3 Win Over Rhode Island

(Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson)
On opening night of the 2014 season, the Florida Gulf Coast baseball team gave Swanson Stadium a great one as they defeated Rhode Island, 7-3.

Starting on the mound for the Eagles was sophomore Michael Murray. The 2013 unanimous A-Sun All Freshman selection gave the Blue and Green six sold innings of work; he gave up 1 earned run on 7 hits and struck out 4 of the 29 batters he faced. Finishing off the game and getting the win was freshman Garrett Anderson. In 2.1 innings, the Arcadia, Fla. native struck out two and only let up two hits.

After the first five innings proved a pitcher's duel, the young FGCU lineup finally got on the scoring sheet in the sixth. After URI scored two in the bottom half, singles from Drew Valencia and Kevin Young gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

Florida Gulf Coast put the nail in the coffin the next inning, where a Michael Suchy triple capped off a scoring bonanza. The Eagles continue their four game series against URI with a double header tomorrow: Game 1 (Nick Deckert) at 1:00 p.m and Game 2 (Jack English) at 4:00 p.m.

Winning Pitcher: Garrett Anderson (1-0) - 2.1 innings, 2 hits, 2 strikeouts, 0 earned.

FGCU MBB Preview For ETSU & USC Upstate

(Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson)
Although the weather hindered the Eagles' flight to Johnson City, it might be beneficial. FGCU left a day earlier than planned and has three days of practice inside ETSU's dome before they take the floor against the Bucs. The Eagles Nest breaks that game down, along with the Eagles' matinee matchup against USC Upstate on Saturday.

Weather is an ongoing issue so follow us on Twitter (@FGCUEaglesNest) to see the latest. As of right now, both game are still scheduled for their regular times.

Florida Gulf Coast at ETSU: Thursday 7:00 p.m
Eagles Nest Take

The key will be attacking the Bucs' zone. At home, FGCU, mainly Brett Comer, was able to find Chase Fieler in the high post or Eric McKnight / Nate Hicks on the baseline. If the Eagles can continue to work this, they will put on another dunk show and cruise in Johnson City. Also, if FGCU can get out in transition and run - all the better. ETSU won't have time to set up in their zone.

Also, this will be three point specialist Filip Cvjeticanin's first game back following a three game suspension due to a violation of team rules.

Quotables

"Every game and team is different. You can't look at scores - we did such and such at home and then go on the road. You can't take anything for granted. That's not cliche, it's reality. We have to prepare," said Joe Dooley.

"Since I've been here, we haven't won there. There a great defensive team. We just have to be ready to play and prepare ourselves," said Bernard Thompson .

"They're a tough team to play on their home court - we just have to go in there and play great defense. They have a great zone and it's like Syracuse - until you get to it, it's really hard to imitate in practice. The key will be defense and to push it back at them before they can get their zone set," said Chase Fieler.

Florida Gulf Coast at USC Upstate: Saturday 2:00 p.m

Eagles Nest Take

Even without Ty Greene, the Spartans are a scary prospect in the Atlantic Sun. Torrey Craig just went over his 2,000th career point and can attack in multiple different ways. But I believe the key will be on the glass; the Spartans are a large team with the ability to bully inside. A full team effort, not just from McKnight, Fieler, and Hicks, but the guards as well, will be necessary to dominate the glass.

The Spartans have already postponed Thursday's game against Stetson until Monday so they will be very well rested for Saturday.

Quotables

"When you look at their [Upstate] defensive stats, their among the conference leaders. They have a presence in the post and perimeter. You're on the road so if you start factoring in those things- they're undefeated in league play at home. Coach Payne is a good coach and they have an experienced team," said Joe Dooley.

"They're a very impressive team. Defensively they get a lot of stops. Jodd Maxey is a very active defender and Ricardo Glenn is big and physical inside. Torrey Craig is as offensively gifted in our league as anyone," said Chase Fieler.

FGCU VB Hires Former Colorado State Assistant Matthew Botsford As New Head Coach

After Dave Nichols stepped down as the Florida Gulf Coast volleyball coach, the Eagles have been on a search to find a new program leader. That search ended Monday as athletic director Ken Kavanagh announced that FGCU has hired former Colorado State assistant Matthew Botsford.

“I’d first like to thank Ken and the administration for giving me this opportunity. From the second I stepped foot on campus it was apparent to me that the successes at FGCU were a reflection of the people in the department and the passion they have, and that’s one of the things that attracted me to the position. Also, I’ve been extremely blessed to have worked with some great coaches in my career, and Tom Hilbert (current CSU head coach) is one of them. My time working with him has been invaluable because he’s shown me how to run a program beyond what just takes place on the court. He’s been a steward of the game, a valued member of the community and I’m extremely thankful for him preparing me to move into this position.” -Botsford via press release

In his two years at CSU, Botsford assisted in the Rams back to back Mountain West championships, and two entrances into the NCAA tournament. CSU was 49-10 in his time in Fort Collins. Prior to Colorado State, the now FGCU head coach spent time coaching at Miami, Notre Dame, and IUPUI.

Botsford brings in hefty recruiting experience, espcially with Miami, that will be crucial in his start with the Eagles. He is taking over a program coming off a 14-19 season that ended in a semifinal loss to JU in the Atlantic Sun tournament.

Eagles Roll On, Defeat UNF 73-46

(Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson)
Florida Gulf Coast (16-9, 10-2) continued their recent domination on Saturday night as, in front of a plethora of recruits, they steamrolled over UNF (13-13, 7-6), 73-46.

Similar to Thursday night, it took just about 10 seconds for the Eagles to score as they got off to a hot start, leading 30-16. But an Ospreys zone slowed down the FGCU offense and cut the lead to only 11 at half.

"We've picked it up defensively, pressuring them at the beginning of the half," Thompson said. "We stole the ball, got some dunks and that just built our momentum."

After the break, it was all #DunkCity. They sprinted out to a 31-6 run to give themselves a comfortable leave and the fans a great show.

"Our guys just locked back in, got out of foul trouble and we're more efficient offensively," Dooley said.

Similar to Mercer's Bud Thomas, Brett Comer has went on a tear since donning his Rip Hamilton esque mask. And as of late, the junior guard has also been shooting well from beyond the arc; he knocked in his first two against UNF en route to his 10 points.

Arguably the Eagles best play so far this season, Bernard Thompson put together a very efficient performance: 17 points (7/8 FGs) in 24 minutes.

While FGCU got into early foul trouble (big surprise, I know), solid contributions from the bench, including Marcus Blake: 4 points, 6 rebounds. Against ETSU and USC Upstate this week, the Eagles will have to be more careful about taking silly fouls.

#DunkCity is once again tied with Mercer in 1st place in the Atlantic Sun. The two powerhouses rematch on February 21st in Fort Myers.

Local Fort Myers Guard Talks Season, Recruitment, & FGCU

While it was reported yesterday that FGCU offered a 2014 guard out of DC, the Eagles are also recruiting considerably closer to home.

Local guard Mark Matthews of Fort Myers HS has put together a nice junior season together and Florida Gulf Coast has taken notice.

"We're 19-8 and play in the regional quarterfinal on Thursday," Matthews said. "It's been a rebuilding year, we have some young guys on our team but it's been pretty good so far."

Last week Matthews, en route to 22 points and 18 boards, tipped in a miss at the buzzer to give the Green Wave a 57-55 win over rival Bishop Verot.

"That's our biggest rivalry of the year, it's huge for us every time. Over 2,000 people were there," Matthews said.

The 6-5 combo guard/forward is averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds a game this season and recently visited FGCU, for Jacksonville on Thursday and UNF on Saturday.

"Ever since they got to the tournament it's been a crazy environment," Matthews said. "Their style of play is nice, the way they move the ball up and down the floor. It's a great program."

Along with interest from FGCU (no offer), Matthews informed me of interest from Bucknell, Northwestern, Davidson, UCF, Xavier, and Virginia Tech.

Florida Gulf Coast Reportedly Offers 2014 Guard Out Of DC

Although FGCU is already one over the scholarship limit for next season, according to Marcus Helton (of DMVElite) the Eagles have offered 6-4 guard Jamall Gregory of Coolidge HS in Washington, DC.

Per the Washington Post, Gregory opened this season with three straight double-doubles, and six in 12 games.

Back in the summer of 2012, the Coolidge star, who was with AAU team DC Assault, competed in "The Takeover", an event sponsored by the AAU team: Team Takeover. First year FGCU assistant coach Jamill Jones coached for Takeover for five years before being hired by the Eagles.

Athleticism is no issues for Gregory, as you can see from this dunk contest in which he threw down over five teammates.

FGCU To Host Recruits Over Big Weekend

(Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson)
With Atlantic Sun play winding down to the final stretch, a couple of Florida Gulf Coast recruits will be visiting over the weekend and taking in Saturday's game vs. North Florida.

Sajon Ford (6-11 PF) 2015: Out of St. Petersburg, Ford plays for Gibbs HS and during the AAU season, Team Speights. FGCU commit Christian Terrell also rides with Team Speights so the two know each other but Ford plays on the the team younger. He does currently hold an offer from Florida Gulf Coast.

Michael Green (5-11 PG) 2015: Green, a 2015 point guard, plays for South Plantation HS in Fort Lauderdale and Team Breakdown during the AAU circuit. Eagles commit Zach Johnson also ran with Team Breakdown. Green does not currently hold an offer from FGCU.

Rodney Hunter (6-5 SG) 2015: With Mariner HS, in Cape Coral, Hunter has been averaging 15 points and 2 assists so far this season. He does not yet have an offer from FGCU but does have offers from Kennesaw State and the Eagles' opponent on Saturday, UNF.

Mark Matthews (6-5 SG) 2015: A local Fort Myers HS player, Matthews, at 6-5, can play either SG or SF. He is averaging 19 ppg and 8 rpg so far this season and is great in transition. FGCU has shown interest but he does not hold an offer.

Zach Lee (6-7 SF) 2014: From Elev8 Sports Institute, Lee is the only 2014 recruit in attendance. He holds an offer from FGCU and tells me FAU is going after him the hardest.

Two of FGCU's commits in the class of 2014, Christian Terrell and Zach Johnson, will also both be visiting for Saturday's game.

FGCUEaglesNest has also been informed that FGCU is working hard to get 2015 guard CJ Williamson down to #DunkCity for a visit.

Comer's Career High Leads FGCU To 100-71 Whooping Of Jacksonville

(Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson)
Florida Gulf Coast, led by Brett Comer's career high 30 points, captured a revengeful 100-71 win over Jacksonville on Thursday night.

"We we're aggressive, something we didn't do at Jacksonville," Comer said. "Today we did a good job getting in the paint and finishing around the rim."

The junior point guard also added 8 assists, and a main beneficiary of those was Eric McKnight, who scored a career high 22 points.

"A lot of them were effort points, running down the floor. He [McKnight] does a lot of things for other people that doesn't reflect in the stats," said Joe Dooley.

With eight dunks on the night, FGCU certainly lived up to their ever so famous moniker. The most eye opening slam might have been Brett Comer's March Madness esque alley-oop to Bernard Thompson.

"When Bernard throws it ahead to me, he's always expecting it back," Comer said. "I just threw it as high as I could so he would have a chance for it."

To fans' delight, a Marcus Blake layup brought the Eagles over the century mark.

"It was really fun, and a little comical...it was nice to give them [the fans] that," Comer said.

FGCU WBB Streak Ends With Loss To NKU

(Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson)
The Eagles headed into Highland Heights on Saturday night looking to extend their Atlantic Sun dominance. But instead, NKU halted FGCU, and their streak, 63-43. Prior to last night, the Eagles had won 44 straight Atlantic Sun games, a national record.

Whitney Knight poured in 19 points and added 4 blocks but that was not enough to boost an otherwise stagnant Eagles offense. NKU went on a 19-0 run to end the first half and never looked back.

Florida Gulf Coast is now 14-7 (8-1) on the season and tied for 1st in the A-Sun with rival Stetson. They head to ETSU on Thursday, Feb. 6

Thompson's Clutch Three Leads Eagles To 71-68 Win Over Stetson

(Courtesy of Linwood Ferguson)
With time winding down in a bustling Alico Arena, Bernard Thompson raised up and connected on a well contested three, giving the Eagles the lead with 2.4 seconds left. A Brett Comer inbounds steal secured it - FGCU walked away with a 71-68 win over Stetson.

Thompson ended the day with 17 points and 4 rebounds, continuing a little hot streak as of late. Leading the Eagles charge was lone senior Chase Fieler who tallied 15 points while adding a career high 14 rebounds.

An encouraging sign for Florida Gulf Coast was that four of the five starters scored in double figures, including Jamail Jones with 15 points.

The Marquette transfer is averaging 7.2 ppg this season. His last double digit performance (13 points again) was Jan. 9 against UNF but prior to that, you have to track back to Nov. 26 against NC State for his last time breaking 10 points. It is an encouraging sign for the combo redshirt junior, and hopefully something to build on.

In front of a recording tying 4,633 capacity crowd, the Eagles shot 40% (6/15) from beyond the arc, another positive from a win that was a little too close for comfort.

Prior to the game however, it was announced that junior Filip Cvjeticanin would be suspended for the next three games (including Stetson) due to a violation of team rules. His projected return would be Feb. 13 at ETSU.

“We’re disappointed in Filip and he’s disappointed in himself, but I’m confident that he will learn from this situation and be a valuable member of our team moving forward. Now it’s important for us to have the whole team step up in Filip’s absence to help fill his void over the next three games," -Dooley (via press release)

With the three point specialist out, the Eagles best beyond the arc shooter (percentage wise) is Brett Comer, 31.7%. Bernard Thompson is seen as the bigger threat though.
