FGCU Defeats Scrappy Tritons

After the Tritons had no more fight left, Florida Gulf Coast pulled away on Monday night in Alico and ended with a 72-55 win over Eckerd.

The Eagles saw determined Filip Cvjecticanin make his first start in a while and Bernard Thompson get the night off. Thompson was still nursing his ankle injury and Dooley made the wise choice to give him some rest. Cvjecticanin made the most of his start, scoring 12 points and snagging 2 rebounds. All of his shots came from outside the arc, and he connected on 4 of the 6. Two came from the corner and gave the Eagles a quick spurt of points in the second half.

"[I'm] proud of the way Nate and Filip stepped up for us tonight. They've been working hard and it's nice to see that rewarded," said head coach Joe Dooley.

An encouraging sign for the Blue and Green was that all the starters scored in double figures. Comer with 18, Hicks with 12, Jones with 10, Fieler with 15, and of course Cvjeticanin with 12. On the night the Eagles shot 56.5% from the floor, the best they've done all year.

Unfortunately, FGCU could not capitalize when they were at the free throw line. In a UNC fashion, they connected on 7 of their 15 FTs for an abysmal 46.7%.

The Eagles continue their season on Saturday (Nov. 23) at 7:05 p.m when they take on nearby Ave Maria.
